re: St. Patrick's Day.

Just a couple of quick comments.

1) I do enjoy the music and festivities of the day, but I only attend them every 2-3 years.

The crowds are far to big, loud and rowdy for me to enjoy the festivities.

2) My name is O'Halloran, I have no need to wear wear green to prove that I'm irish.

3) I love celtic music, but not what most folks call "irish" music.

1) I used to play in a dart league. One day we had league on Mar. 17. Took me 1/2 hour to go to the bathroom -- not that the bathroom was crowded but could not WALK from one end of the bar to the other. That was the first, and last, time I was in an Irish Pub on St. Pat's

2) My name is Wu :} but that's something I can blame the husband for. I've got Sweeneys and Corcorans running through the blood. I have no need to wear green to prove that I'm 75% Irish -- and I have NO need to drink green beer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tonight, lamb chops, braised root veggies, and colcannon - how else can I get cabbage into the kiddies.

3) I love celtic music AND Irish music - at least if we're talking the "drinking song" genre. (Me father was orange, me mother was green).

OH -- check this ...

on the crowds thing...

I will typically go to a Mexican restaurant on St. Patricks Day and to an Irish Restaurant on Cinco De Mayo. I avoid he crowds that way ;)

In my neck of the woods, on St. Pat's day, Mexican restaurants are really busy. They have lunch, beer and marguie specials :).

Another reason I usually avoid the wearing of the green and pubs is because St. Patrick wasn't terribly good for celtic culture or spirituality. However, tonight I'm making an exception since Dave Nachmanoff (http://www.davenach.com/calendar.html)is doing a celtic concert at a pub in Winters that makes good cornbeef and cabbage. A friend and I are heading up for that.

I'd like to see some festivities. Fremont is lame.

Also, it's lame to be a red head who isn't irish on St. Patrick's Day. Hello? Russian. I think red hair originated from the Slav's anyway. Who knows.

I think red hair originated from the Slavs
Vikings, more likely. Thus the well known cliche "I've taken a Viking to her"

It's Not Easy Being Green

Since St. Pat's Day is today, I didn't do anything in class yesterday. We had pi day on Wednesday, and had an "event" then. Instead, our class listened to Altan, I gave them a brief history of why the shamrock is significant, and we learned about the Book of Kells. Then the kids colored Book of Kells Illo's (I picked up a Book of Kells coloring book in 95 when we went to Trinity College). Yeah, I'm a rebel. Whew hoo.

When we were over in Ireland then, Dave's cousins asked why the Americans go overboard on this day. We told them it was a commercial thing, and used cultural heritage as an excuse. They "celebrate" by going to church. It is traditionally a religious celebration and hedonism is not condoned, although I suspect it may have changed since then.

I was going to go up to Dublin today, but I got my exhausted butt outta bed late. It's rare that I get to go to festivals anymore with my schedule.

Tonight we drink Guinness! Probably at home, away from the madding crowds.

Kita wanted me to remind you that your last name wasn't always O'Halloran. :)

"Me too!" Except my last name is Hanrahan :)

1) I've only ever been in a bar on St Patrick's Day when I was paid to do so. I was part of the band. (We had Thai food for lunch today and we'll order pizza tonight. And watch "The Quiet Man".)

2) My name is Connors. I have no need to wear green to prove I'm Irish. Green is my favorite colour, though. (I wrote a song about being Irish when one doesn't fight, drink, or celebrate St. Paddy's Day).

3) I love Celtic music and a fair bit of what you might call "Irish" music. But our band only played "Danny Boy" or "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" after we had pocketed substantial tips. I don't like a lot of the fightin' drinkin' rowdy war sorts of songs.

I wore my Howard University T-shirt to rehearsals today. That's about as Irish as I'm gonna get.
