Consonance 2016 starts in just 5 days!

The SF Bay Area’s only Filk Convention.

Featuring Concerts, Workshops, Drum Circle and all night filking.

Program grid is posted here: http://consonance.org/program.html

This year’s Guests are:

Guests of Honor: Cheshire Moon
Cheshire Moon is the fanciful collaboration of trickster bird Lizzie Crowe and
crazed magician Eric Coleman.

International Interfilk Guest: Jela Schmidt
While she comes across as a quiet and serene person at first,
it does usually not take long until she dishes out her first unexpected
spot-on pun in a fun conversation. I tell you, she can pun in BOTH languages, it is scary

Special Guest: Kathleen Sloan
She tapes concerts and open filks, and craftily uses these tapes to mine
for the very best songs, which she learns and performs, spreading
filk gems throughout the community.

Toastmaster: Tim Griffin
Tim taught grades K-5for eighteen years, while writing and performing
fun educational music on the side. Over the years, the music grew into
a second full-time job.

Why Was There A Sudden Change In My Appearance?

In March, during my wife Chris' annual mammogram, there was a cancerous lump detected.

If Chris had to have chemo, she would lose her hair. So I decided that I would shave my beard and head in solidarity.

Our friend, and author, Jay Lake has been battling cancer for the several years now and the incidental costs are overwhelming his income. So an ongoing fund raising campaign has begun, with events at various science fiction conventions, functions and online.

When Baycon announced they would be hosting a fundraiser for Jay, I thought I could show solidarity with Chris and help support Jay. I decided to contribute an act of Whimsy (see Jay's blogs for examples) -- $200 for the beard, $300 for the mustache, $500 for the hair. http://goo.gl/BAoGy

This is very emotional change for me. I have not cut my hair short since I left the Us Air Force in 1989, I've have a mustache since I left basic training in 1984, I have had a beard since 1990. Chris has never seen me without facial hair, except in pictures

Fortunately Chris' tumor was surgically removed with clean margins and follow-up tests showed it to be a very lazy form of cancer. So Chris just has to have radiation treatments, so there should be no hair loss.

Since I had not announced the planned act of whimsy, I decided not to offer it. But then, at the closing ceremony at Baycon, the fundraising totals were announced. The total for Jay's fundraiser was $2640 (see the Baycon blogs for exact numbers), so I jumped up and said if there were donations to take it to $3000, I would shave my beard & mustache. In under 10 minutes, the money was collected.

I was planning on shaving in my room and making the reveal at the Dead Dog, but folks asked if I would shave in public if the total collected exceeded $500. I agreed assuming another few minutes of fund raising Turns out a total $550 had already been collected.

Someone asked "How much for the hair?" Several hands shot up into the air holding more money. Chris quickly said "NO!", so I called out loudly "My wife says 'NO!'" and the hands went down reluctantly.

At the Dead Dog party, there were towels, hot water, razors, shaving gel and a mirror. Chris trimmed my beard and I started shaving. In front of 200+ folks. It took nearly 15 minutes, using all 5 razors in the package, but in the end I was clean shaven for the first time in 23 years. Photographs were taken and at at least one person took a video of the entire process.

Chris posts to facebook:

"Woo hoo! No more surgery! Just got good news from Kaiser - the biopsy on the lymph node is negative - no cancer! And the margins they took around the lump are clear as well! They will need to do some radiation and/or chemotherapy, but no more surgery. Thank you all for your prayers and good thoughts."
johno: (Fuck Cancer)
Lets start with the headline.

[livejournal.com profile] chriso had surgery yesterday to remove a <2 cm sized nodule of stage 1 cancer from her right breast, the surgeon also took her first lymph node for testing.

We know several folks dislike them, but we love Kaiser Permanente because of how they handled this.

4 weeks ago, Chris had her annual mammogram.
They called the following Tue to schedule a follow-up mammogram.

3 weeks ago, Chris had the follow-up. They asked that she stick around while the images were reviewed. They wanted to take a biopsy of what they found. The biopsy was done that same afternoon.

Last week, on Wednesday Chris received a call from a doctor saying they found something. Chris spoke to the Doctor who gave her the bad news, a Nurse and scheduling clerk. We were in having a meeting with the surgeon that afternoon, and he scheduled the surgery for the next Thursday. He was looking for a date even sooner.

Friday afternoon was taken up with tests and more discussions and the list of do's and don'ts for the "10 days prior to surgery." ..the one that happening in 5 days...

This week on Wednesday, Chris received an injection of radioactive dye to so they could trace the path from the nodule to the first lymph node.

Yesterday Chris had her surgery. We arrived at 10am, were checked in quickly. She was prepped and moved to Pre-Op, but the previous surgery ran long, so instead of starting at 12:40, she didn't even go into the OR till 1:30.

She was in recovery at 3:30, which means the surgery went exactly as long as it should have. They let me in to see her at 4pm. Chris was awake, looking good and feeling good. If a bit groggy and sore.

They released her at 5pm and we were home at 5:30.

Friends brought over dinner.

Today was a quiet day. We actually did some shopping but it drained both of us so we took a nap. Then went out to dinner. We're really wiped out and will probably be heading to be soon (which is very early for us.)

Meet Ookla The Mok, Guests of Honor

But first, some announcements.

The complete Program Book has been posted on the website.

The program lists the breakfast buffet as being from 10-Noon on Saturday and Sunday. It will actually be opening at 8am. It will also be operating on Friday and Monday with shorter hours. Hours will be posted at the info desk.

If you are not staying in the hotel, you can also purchase the buffet. Price will be posted at the info desk.

If you don't plan on using your breakfast vouchers, please drop them in the jar in the consuite. They will be given to our GOHs or your fellow fans in need.

Now on to meeting Ookla the Mok

You notice an antique nickelodeon near the door. Having a nickel to spare, you deposit your five cents and turn the crank.

Tick. Tick. Tick tick-tick-tick-tiktiktiktiktiktik...

A flickering image of a strange creature appears. Body of a man, but the furry head is fringed by a striped mane and fangs protrude from the mouth. A raccoon-like mask of dark fur surrounds the eyes. He opens his mouth and tilts his head back, evidently roaring, and a title appears below the picture:

OOKLA THE MOK!

The name seems familiar somehow.

The creature’s image cross-fades to a picture of a three-piece band. Two guitarists with artistically-trimmed beards flank a handsome fellow seated at a drum kit. The sub title remains, however, and adds another exclamation point. Then a second line appears:

Rock Music for Nerds.

The band goes into action, playing furiously while various images flicker in, animate a bit, then fade out, in the background: flying saucer, several super-heroes, a cowboy, the starship Enterprise, an astronaut, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a pirate, mathematical equations, a tandem bicycle, and monkeys, oh my dear Lord, so many monkeys. The only thing out-numbering the monkeys is the parting couples, usually featuring a pratfall during their separation.

Consonance marks the release of the BRAND NEW CD: Vs.Evil!”

Ookla the Mok, has been getting filk audiences on their feet for over 20 years, and shows no reduction in energy yet. Since they’re from Buffalo, the Bay Area is about as far from home as they perform, yet they've played more concerts at Consonance than at any other single con. This is their fourth appearance at Consonance, and -- after an unreasonable amount of time off from the con circuit -- they couldn't be happier to make their return appearance here.

Thanks to Paul Kwinn for Ookla's bio.

Meet Merav Hoffman, Interfilk Guest of Honor

Merav an excellent and accomplished filk gardener. She will, when
the need arises, moderate a circle without people even realizing she's
doing it, consciously encourage those that need it and redirect those
who need that, all while never losing her sense of manners.

She pays attention -- and so will often notice and encourage
hidden talent in a circle before anyone else knows it's there.

Merav is an accomplished performer. One can see it in how she
acts, how she dresses (often), and always, always in her performances.
Her songs are always fun to listen to (or harmonize with), her voice
is gorgeous, and when she raises her own voice to harmonize with yours,
the result is always better than the sum of its parts.

Thanks to Joshua Kronengold for Merav's bio.

Downtown Freddy Brown, International Guest of Honor

Fred’s parents knew from a very early age that he would be involved in music. When he was only 2 years old he crawled up the aisle after a church service to where the musicians were and picked up a violin…and started to blow into it. He was fascinated with all kinds of music and instruments as he got older. He took trumpet lessons when he was 8, guitar when he was 12, french horn in high school & sang in the choir.

So, how did Fred end up with a slightly perverted, twisted sense of humour and a passion for parody? Good question! I think we have to say he was cracked from the get go and fell into filk quite by accident. A friend invited him to Toronto Trek V. "What do you get for $35" he asked? Panels, Dealers room, Movie room, ... the beer was free?

On his way to the dealers room, he heard a guitar being strummed in a room off the corridor. He stuck his head in and found a couple of ladies playing some songs (who? read it in the program book...). He ran and got his guitar and was welcomed into the filk circle and has never looked back since.

Thanks to Downtown Freddy Brown for providing his bio.

Meet Scott Snyder our Toastmaster

Scott likes RPG games a lot. He also writes music for several video games, performs superbly in a band or two, and works on the albums of other excellent musicians. One of which is Captains of the Chess Team, a band of game industry musicians based in Austin. This group rocks hard, and you can listen to Scott’s “Bit Torrent of Love” at their website and check out several youtube videos.

Scott was a Broadcast Journalist for the US Army and did “everything from Program Management of a radio station in Monterey, to drive time FM Radio on-air personality, to television and radio spot producer, and station graphic artist in charge of station imagery for AFKN (American Forces Korea Network).” .

Those of you lucky enough to have met him know he is a funny, kind, and talented guy.

His song, “Feygrass” was nominated twice for a Pegasus Award in 2005 and 2009. “Secrets” was nominated for a Pegasus in 2012. He has also mastered albums for several filkers and performed in them, Talis Kimberley’s brilliant Queen of Spindles being one of them.

Speaking of albums, His filk music is it is difficult to get ahold of. Bardic Lug was released on tape in 1997. We need more Scott! Luckily, he is currently recording a new album with Jeff Bohnhoff.

Thanks to Dr Mary Crowell for Scott's bio. See the Program book for His full bio.

Our hotel block reservations is now closed, but if you call and ask
nicely they might give you the con rate still. Check their website for
a variety of deals they have available.

The hotel is almost complete in its renovations. All rooms have been
updated, public spaces have been refreshed.

Almost is the key word there. Unfortunately the restaurant is still
closed. However, the hotel will be setting up a breakfast buffet in
Champagne 1 Sat & Sun mornings during the Filker friendly hours of
10am-Noon. Hotel guests can order room service for lunch & dinner at
regular restaurant prices + gratuity. No price hike, no service charge.

For those who want or need to go off-site, there will be a restaurant
guide in the program book. I've been posting it in the FB & G+
Consonance & Filk communities as well.

You can also find the Program Guide posted in the FB & G+ groups.

Looking forward to seeing you all in a week.
