Reading through candidate position information and read this one:

Jim King

Candidate for
Lieutenant Governor; State of California

{snip, snip}

Top Priorities if Elected

* return God to govt. & schools. we are "one nation under God".

Which God? Which religion?

California was and is build on a multiculturalism that extends well beyond skin color, wealth (or lack there of) or where you came from. Trying to place any one vision above another is ludicrous in this society.

{eep}

Political talk from JohnO, how strange.

At my birthday party I was soing dramatic readings from the California Voters Information Guide. One of the Libertarian Party candidates --I don't recall if he was the Lt. Guv or Sec. of State candidate-- had a candidate position paper that was a stitch.

I'll see if I can find it online tonight.

I think it was the Natural Law Party's candidate you presented to us.

Noooo ... California was established initially by a buncha haven't-bathed-in-a-year spaniards that had just finished going into Aztec lands and stealing anything that wasn't nailed down (and a number of things that were) ...

Ok ... must remember to stop LJing during periods of very low blood sugar

. . . and then some Catholic priests showed up and started civilizing the Indians by stealing their land and terrifying them into submission; and later the Mexicans showed up and established huge ranchos full of scrawny cattle . . . only to see them taken away after the Mexican-American War, when the Feds promised to respect Mexican landowner's property rights but the California Supreme Court took them away less than a decade later . . . and the resulting birth of the railroad machine . . . which in turn got its butt kicked by the "Progressives" who established the Los Angeles Machine . . . which runs water politics (and therefore the rest of politics) in California today.

This is only multicultural because the losers stopped getting massacred . . . the tendency to resolve ownership disputes with less and less actual _violence_ and more and more _paperwork_.

So you might say multiculturalism is the ability of different groups to live together without killing each other with machetes and AK-47s. Progress, of a sort.
