Building a family

This flowed out of my fingers tonight as part of a chat tonight...

When you gather folks around you that you love, who are not lovers, at some point you have to stop calling them "just" friends and the best word for that group is family.

Agreed.

I tend to be a stickler for accuracy and call them "virtual family," especially since I don't want to lower them to the level of biological family like my brother (ugh).

I'm partial to the term "chosen family" myself...there's nothing virtual about the love between me and mine.

Yep...

...that's the term I use as well.

absolutely!

I wouldn't have a family at all if it weren't for the one I have with my friends (and of course the one with james and the bean)

I definitely agree, and that's a good way of phrasing it. Do you mind if I borrow that for my "Samplers" file?

Um, I try to be careful about such things, so I want to clarify this. Do you mean "Yep, you mind," or "Yep, it's ok to borrow the quote (with appropriate credit, etc.)"?

Yes, you have permission to borrow the quote.

Great! Thanks.

There is family you were born (are stuck)with and then there is the family of the heart. Family of the heart is not necessarily blood related, but tis nice when that happens. Family of the heart can be anyone from the little kid down the street who picks you dandylions to the little old man down the street that you mow his lawn because you want to. Then he turns around and gives you tomatoes he canned himself. Family of the heart can be someone you email and havent met in person yet. Yet you know the same jokes and when you finally do meet, you can sit in silence and be comfy.

And I blather on :
