It's finally happened, after many years of financial hardship, KTEH gives in to the big boy on the block.

Check the front page of KQED for a bigger pic of the handshake. Tom's smile is a little strained, don't ya think.

Crap. Well, after all their frantic fundraising have resulted in so little, I'm not surprised. But yeah, that's too bad. A little less diversity, even in public television.

Ken Patterson was talking about it at BASFA last night; the programming at both stations is supposed to remain autonomous (and may well become so in Watsonville, which is currently a KTEH simulcast), but he admits he's still a little concerned for the future.

Best case scenario is that their combined buying power reduces their acquisition costs for shows and lets them redirect some of the savings into programming.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Tom's a great guy - I've met him several times when working phones on pledge drives - and this must be killing him. It's practically killing me.

No more drunken lovefests with Craig Charles...sigh.

I don't watch even Public TV; I only listen to KQED radio (in the car) except when our King is speechifying... :p

There is something troubling about this. I seem to recall KQED being forced to sell off their stake in Channel 32 (then KQEC, now KMTP, featuring the best of Deutche Welle TV and the ARTS free filler channel). I don't recall the reasoning or circumstances behind that, and it probably won't be a problem given current broadcasting regulations. Still, I really have no idea.
