We were discussing TV shows tonight.

We are amazed and appalled at the level of violence that's been on TV lately.

We love 24 and Kingpin, but they are very hard to watch, due to the extreme violence they contain.

Yet whenever the subject strays to sex or the chance of showing the human body, folks freak out.

Just an observation, cause we couldn't come up with an answer ourselves.

You said it!

One of my favorite movies is one that makes precisely this point: is The People VS. Larry Flynt. In the middle of this movie, Larry Flynt shows a montage of porn images interspersed with ugly violent images, and asks which is more obscene. If you haven't seen the flick, I highly recommend it (I own the DVD, of course).

I don't watch heavily violent movies. I refuse. And I'd never watch The Sopranos or Oz. When we talk about seeing a movie, I'm always asking my friends "but, how violent is it?", over and over again.

This topic is definitely one of my big pet peeves....

We finally watched (or tried to watch) OZ a couple weeks ago. As the 3rd ultra-violent scene started we turned it off.

We were taping it for a friend's Mom who knows one of the special guest stars. We informed our friend, to recomend that her Mom NOT watch the tape.

When the kids (ages 13 and 11) want to know whether they may watch an R-rated movie, I need to know why it carries an R rating. If it's because of nudity or language, I'm fine with it. If it's violence, no way -- and they agree with me. They don't like violence either.

I don't watch Kingpin or 24, I'm afraid. The new Dragnet is as close as I come.

PS -- I continue to be annoyed with the Discovery Channel for always having crime/forensics shows on in the evening, rather than something that kids can watch.

We've been feeling that way lately about The Shield. Last season was really good, but this season seems less dramatic & a lot more violent, and each episode tries to out do the last.
