I wrote this in reply to a bit of fanfic last year, but after watching "School Reunions" last night, I think it applies still:

Many times it's been said the show Doctor Who needs the companions, so that the Doctor may explain to them (and by extension the audience) what is going on.

Rarely has it been discussed how the Doctor himself, needs his companions to keep him sane, keep him grounded and remind him that it is all worth while.

I teared up several times while watching this episode as I realized that the companions know this too. It's not their job, it's their fate, and despite the hardships and pain involved, their joy as well.

Cool! And I totally agree on both "reasons" for the companions, both as a story device, but also as a touchstone for the very lonely Doctor.

I have been amazed on an almost weekly basis how good this show is. During a Relaxacon this weekend, I commented that the show was first made for kids and SF geeks. Its still being made for them. But the kids grew up and the geeks got respectable. The show reflects that.

There are times I want them to get through the MOW stuff so we can learn more about the Doctor.

One of the best SF shows on the TV!
