AB849 has passed the CA State Assembly

Mark Leno's Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection act AB849

It's time for for Governor Schwarzenegger to stick to his word that if such a bill were to cross his desk, he would sign it.
Per comments made during an appearance on The Tonight Show last year.

The question now is: Is he a man of his word, or is he a girly man who will bow to special interests?

Make the call.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Phone: 916-445-2841
Fax: 916-445-4633

The Governor's office has a voicemail tree already configured to take your opinion. Listen to make sure the numbers are right, but I hear the buttons in order to show support are 2 - 1 - 1. I'll be calling in the morning.

Found in [livejournal.com profile] bovil's and [livejournal.com profile] danaoshee's journals. {...and many more now}

---Edit to add---

You can also use the form at http://www.govmail.ca.gov/ (be sure to use the dropdown to choose AB849 and click the SUPPORTING button before you submit the form.

Email is never as effective as a phone call or postal mail. So call in, too!

I'm confused. Why is there a bunch of text about fish and game codes there crossed out? Is it just that they were too lazy to write an entire new page?

It's usual as bills progress through various committees, for them to get unrelated items are added and deleted.

What I don't get...

Didn't the voters of California settle this issue pretty decisively in 2000, with proposition 22? How can the legislature overrule that?

Also, can you point me to a link for Schwarzenegger's alleged promise? I pretty clearly remember him saying in '03 that he was for same-sex civil unions, but not same-sex marriage. Did he qualify that at some time, and say that he would sign a gay marriage bill even though he opposed it? Again, I'd like to see the exact quote.

Unlike most props it did not actually change the state consitituion. Prop 22 simply added one line to the Family Law. What the prop put in, the legislature can change or even take out. They are, after all, the elected represenitives of the people of California.

Schwarzenegger said it on the Tonight Show in 2004:

I set it on one-touch dial and just kept pressing 4 until I got through (about 20 minutes).
