Well, since these emoticons in their huge and almost endless variety HAVE been around for over 20 years (as I know from first-hand experience /~__^ ), long before the current hyper-trendy-popularity of Anime (which I have also been a big fan of for over 20 years), it's silly to now refer to them as "Japanese"... I think some quiz-makers just aren't very familiar with their Geek History. XD

Aye, but I was trying to think of why these young'uns who know not of the ARPANet might associate them with japanese. That's the best I could come up with; honestly, I'm as baffled as ye.
