Chris and I stopped by the local Toyota dealer,
put down our $500 deposit,
filled out the credit forms,
and got on the list for a new Prius.

but I don't believe you. it took us 4.5 months to get ours, although admittedly part of that was wanting a grey interior.

1) Toyota is ramping up production, wait time is down to 1-3 months

2) Some dealers are charging $2-5K for the privlage of buying a Prius, so sales are slowing a little.

3) Toyota of Fremont:
a) does not charge a dealer mark-up
b) agressivly markets to the internet.
c) gets an allocation of 20+ Priuses, twice monthly

The first Oct allocation is already allocated, but he thinks there may be something for us in the 2nd allocation.

The Nov allocation, should have our preferred options and color. As Toyota attempts to fufill the color/options requests in the next month if not filled from a previous allocation.

The Frame/Undercarrage/Wheelbase for the Prius, Vibe & Prism (the old car) are Toyota Corola.

So yep, this will be the 3rd Toyota for us.

We're waiting a bit to see how the new hybrid Highlander turns out. A Prius just couldn't haul the stuff we need.

Of course, we're also waiting to see if Subaru comes out with a good hybrid system. The rumors are swirling, and we're happy with the Forester for the most part.

My uncle bought one of the 1st-gen Priuses. He likes the car A LOT but was disappointed with the gas mileage and acceleration. I hope that the Synergy Drive fixed that.

Keep in mind the guy's been driving slightly souped-up CVCC Hondas, as well as Ford and Chrysler big block v8s all his life.

He and his wife are also bus drivers (hence most of my inspiration).

Oh, and instead of doing what everybody else does and paint flames on the side of his car, he painted lightning bolts on the side of his Prius. I'll have to scan you a picture.

There are actually 3 generations of prius.

Classic. 2000-2001
1st gen 2001-2002
2nd gen 2003-2005

Classic didn't deliver on the promised milage, but was cleaner burning then anything but pure electric.

2nd gen got the 45-50mpg promised.

3rd gen is now getting 50-55mpg,
but also has much improved power.

...and from the "Journal of Duh!" any little car would feel sluggish compared to a old school V-8s.

There is a pile of SUVs in the pipeline for the next year or so.

Hopefully one of the auto makers will make a minivan.

Though from our experience in a friend's prius there is lots of room for 4 to sit comfortably and cargo space at least for 3 folks with a weekend of luggage.

i haven't found my prius to be sluggish. however i am not impressed with the gas milage. we have now put approximately 2k miles on it in the last 5 weeks and we are getting 39-40mpg. this is a mix of city and highway driving.

still better than my other car but.

Classic was sluggish.
1st gen wasn't so bad.
2nd gen, I find to be very good.
(I've driven a friend's on a road trip.)

Road trip to Sacramento we got 40mpg, but then again we were cruizing at 75-80mph. If we stayed around 60mph the instant mpg was around 50mpg.

10-15 days and we'll have our own numbers to report.
