Cheap Photo light setup...

Go to your local hardware/home improvement store.

Purchase some clamp on work lights & basic soft white light bulbs.

Go to school supply section of your local department store.

Get large sheets of white art/construction paper.

Clamp light to chair, facing wall.

Tape paper to wall in front of light.

Light reflects off the paper, falling on model in a nice soft even glow.

Umbrellas and lights on stands give you lots of control, but the clamp-ons with paper reflectors give you a starter setup.

That's why you use soft whites. A little warm, but they are close to daylight.

If you hunt a bit more you can find "true" daylight bulbs.

That's actually not too far from the setup yohannon's been using, though he opts for direct light, brighter bulbs, and more of them to eliminate shadowing. (It works well enough that when the blokes from ITV shot the documentary with us in '02, they used his light rig....) Y'all might want to compare notes sometime.
