Agreed. I think people would just find a way around them anyway.
1) Saving up for fewer, but longer posts per day. After all, if as a free user I'm limited to 5 posts, why make a bunch of short posts at various points in the day?
2) Start a post for a particular day... and then later just add to it (either by editing the post or tacking on comments)... it's still the same post after all.
I'm not quite sure what will give. I know I have been considering becoming a paid member when I can find the funds for it. (eg: after the car's finished being repaired) ...But, if the rule changes make LJ too annoying to use on a regular basis -- I could jump ship to another journal or stop online journaling & send out emails to my friends instead. I think 1 long daily post or more would probably what I'd end up doing though.
As it is now, there are days I don't post anything at all and then there are days where I post a bunch of stuff that I've stored on my local hard drive but had not gotten around to uploading.
I agree something automated would need to be put in place to stop abusers of the system. I am unsure of a solution. Perhaps either a higher post-limit or maybe (in the case of the .pl script thingie) a way to block the perl script?? [just some late night noodling. I should go put my brain to sleep now.]

5/10/20 are too low.
But damn, if LJ is approaching 1M users, something has to give.
But I'm still glad I'm part of the .2% of Perm users & 1.6% of early adopters.
