At age 15 a very dear friend was taken aside at filk event (SF music event) and told that while she had lots of enthusiasm, it was best that she didn't try to sing anymore.

For 10 years she didn't sing. She organized and worked filk sings, programming tracks & conventions, she wrote stories and songs, but never sang them herself.

She finally started singing her songs.


Tonight she won the 2007 Pegasus Award for Best Performer.


At the end of her acceptance speech, thanked us for proving that person wrong.

As one voice, we called back "YOU Proved him wrong!".


Congrats cadhla, well deserved!

...and I reckon it's around 10 years over due.

There is always someone who thinks it is in the best interest of another to step on their dreams. Here's to Seanan, who rode happily off tonight into the Ohio sunset with the faint imprint of a a critic's shoe on her back. She is proof that going forth in spite of criticism beats all Hell out of sitting quietly in a corner while everyone else makes music. Being happy and successful is always the best response to well-intentioned critics.

Oh that was just *wrong!* (and considering some of the people I've heard sing, completely incomprehensible as well -- filk is about sharing the music and loving it, not about having a Good Voice<tm>. Sheesh!)
