Special notice to folks who email me...

Even with the recent name change, I'm getting tons of spam. In fact, it's getting worse.

To deal, I'm getting ruthless with my spam removal from my inbox.

The following subjects are deleted from my mailbox without checking to see who it's from:

Starting with John, JohnO, Eoin, Tyedye or virtually any given name.
A blank subject, or (No Subject) {{{ Netscape/Mozilla's helpful blank filler.
Any subject with misspelled words or garbage text.
Hi, Hello, Long time, Do you remember me?


What does all this really mean?

Put a coherent useful subject on all emails or else I may assume it's spam.

I'm guessing that a Subject line of "This is not spam" will go right into the filter, too. ;-)

You forgot to include multiple exclamation points in the list of things to delete.

I use lots of filters for my mailing lists and site/folks that I corespond with often, so usually when I see "This is not spam" in the subject or the first few lines of the body, it's gone.

If it's not obvious, tell me who and what you are.

I do it in IM, I'm now doing it with email too.

Do you use SpamCop (http://www.spamcop.net/)? I find it quite helpful in getting rid of spammers because once the spammers know you complain to the authorities, they stop putting you on their lists.

I use Mozilla with the Junk Mail controls turned on and well trained.

95%+ of my spam is auto deleted, I still get 10-20 messages a day that make it through.

Those are the ones not worth reporting to anyone as they the most obviously fraudulent.
