When I decided to attend this month's LJ Meet-Up I had planned on it being a exercise in meeting new folk, as the the only RSVPs were from folk I didn't know.

Well it didn't turn out that way. {grin}

In attendance was:

[livejournal.com profile] chriso
[livejournal.com profile] dafydd
[livejournal.com profile] gridlore
[livejournal.com profile] jemstone
[livejournal.com profile] kshandra
[livejournal.com profile] shadopanther
[livejournal.com profile] murphymom
[livejournal.com profile] lunghai
[livejournal.com profile] johno

6 of whom were already on my frends list and I know from RealLife.

None of the folks I didn't know showed up, or at least they didn't find our group.

We had a good meal, great service and better conversation. Gaming, tech geeking, fannish stuff and plot holes in Star Trek movies.

After dinner the group broke up, but [livejournal.com profile] dafydd, [livejournal.com profile] chriso and I stuck around and played some games. I noticed there are now lots of games that require physical movement, boating, shooting, DDR and even a sword fighting game.

After burning through our "chips" we cashed in our tickets (some games you win tickets, based on how well you did) for points and headed home.

Where's the DDR in D&B? I've never found it!

It was against one of the walls, with only a couple of other games nearby. It didn't obviously say DDR or Dance Dance Revolution, just the word "EXTREME" across the upper banner.

If I can interject here....

The conversation was lovely when I could hear it. Which, quite frankly, wasn't often - I have real problems following discussions in places as noisy as the dining room was. And I know [livejournal.com profile] gridlore wasn't doing much better. With perhaps one exception, the only time either of us took part in the conversations at your end of the table was when comments were expressly directed at us, and subsequently pitched louder.

I've signed back up with Meetup, and will be watching very closely when candidates for the next meeting location are posted. If it winds up being D&B's again, unless we're in one of the private rooms there's not a lot of point in my going back.

I already made pretty much the same comments in response to Meetup's survey of how I liked it.

I thought the end-to-end conversation issues, were just the standard "big table" issues.

If you join "MeetupPlus" you can submit your own venues, but I don't think it's worth the $19 for 6-months or $29 for a year. (You get lots more features for LJ's $25 a year.)

*nod* [livejournal.com profile] gridlore had said "Either a quieter room or a round table," but as I saw none of the latter at D&B's....

I don't really have it to spare, anyway. :-/
