Old and New Names.

Time to renew my drivers license and for some reason I have to do the long form and actually go in and get a eye test, new pic and give a finger print. chriso, who is 11 days older then I am, only needs to send in a check with the preprinted form.

One of the questions is if you've ever used a different name.

The answer for me is yes. After we got married, we both changed our names to what I've considered by family name to be.

Then it asks what names have you used.

I wrote down my old name.

It looked odd.
It looked strange.
I didn’t like it.

35 years I carried a name I didn’t like.

Now I understand where that feeling of freedom came from on our wedding day, when Pastor Don introduced us as Chris and John O'Halloran.

Perhaps the subject should be: True Names.

As to why, from a web page we need to recreate:

Name Change

The name change is official. John's family (His Mother, Uncles and Aunt (Bill, Mike and Edith O'Halloran)) were very excited that Chris and John chose his mother's maiden name.

On December 23, 1995 at 9:40am Judge Lewman pronounced that from that day forward we were to be known as Christina Marie O'Halloran and John Francis O'Halloran. She seemed quite pleased to be making someone happy, as we were scheduled in between several divorce and child support hearings.

Why O'Halloran?

Several months before the wedding we were discussing our names and were running through the possible name combinations.

* Chris Snyder - Chris was willing, but it didn't ring.
* Hill-Snyder - No ring either.
* Snyder-Hill - Blech sounds like a place name.
* John Hill - Boring.

After a few minutes thought, I mentioned that I had been thinking about changing my name to O'Halloran for years. What did she think? Chris thought for a moment or two then said "Christina Marie O'Halloran and John Francis O'Halloran" with naturally rolling R's and it was done.

We didn't want to give my Mom a heart attack, so we told her in advance.

Several of our friends knew, as they had helped us create some of the "O'Halloran" favors.

While neither my Mother nor our friends, shared the secret, most of our friends knew to wait for a "surprise" that my family didn't know about.

On the video tape, when the Pastor announced "With great pleasure, let me introduce you to Mr & Mrs O'HALLORAN!", you can see our friends, Chris, and I and staring at my family. For a moment, there was dead silence, suddenly my Aunt lets out a big whoop as she got it, then my Uncles caught on. Then everybody cheered.

Also, caught on video that we didn't notice a the time, was the 4 or 5 different blessings that were called out when the Pastor declared us "Man and Wife."
